Reconsidering Justice (Global Focus on Knowledge)

This Global Focus on Knowledge lecture series aims to deepen the understanding of students concerning various issues addressed by Professor Michael Sandel in the lecture he delivered at Yasuda Auditorium on the University of Tokyo Hongo Campus during August of last year, and further develop discussions concerning them. (1) The University of Tokyo instructors who were in charge of that seminar will seek to reexamine various issues related to theories about justice from diverse angles, including not just texts that represent Professor Sandel’s own position, but also classics (Aristotle, Kant, Locke, etc.) and contemporary literature on the subject (Rawls, Nozick, Dworkin, etc.) used in his Harvard University lectures, as well as supplementary related materials. (2) In addition, within this lecture series we will invite Professor Sandel to come to the University of Tokyo to engage in a direct dialog with student participants. (3) Furthermore, as a separate but related project, volunteer students of the University of Tokyo, primarily those who will participate in the above lecture and those who participated in the 2011 summer term pan-university independent research seminar, “Reconsidering Justice by Professor Sandel” as preliminary training, are scheduled to take part in a video linkup through Polycom with volunteers chosen from students who have attended Professor Sandel’s lectures at Harvard University. Primary study material: Michael Sandel (ed.), Justice: A Reader, Oxford University Press, 2007, with (Chapters **) indicating the chapter numbers within the book).
