Reflections from UT President Junichi Hamada

UT President Junichi Hamada

The University of Tokyo has been working vigorously to share our accumulated knowledge, research and wisdom with the public through continuing lectures and presentations. Now, in response to a growing demand for increased knowledge sharing, we have decided to post our lecture materials on the Internet.

Interested persons from all over the world can now find syllabus and handouts from a growing number of classes in our curriculum on our UT OpenCourseWare Website. By sharing these materials we believe that we can give real help to students, faculty and researchers throughout the world.

The rapid and ongoing growth in science and technology has dramatically increased the amount of material that must be presented by the university. What's more, due to specialization and segmentation, those outside the university cannot easily understand the contents of each class.

In order to deal with this growing challenge, the University of Tokyo has come up with, and begun to apply, the concept "structuring knowledge." This concept makes clear the various elements of segmented knowledge so that learners can chart the course of their learning by themselves.

At the University of Tokyo, a concrete and workable scheme has been put in place from the "structuring knowledge" concept. The target and result has been to help students learn effectively at our university. Our goal in applying the "structuring knowledge" concept to online sharing of materials, has again been to show the real relationship between various elements and to make their contents clear.

In order to make this online sharing possible, the OCW system at the University of Tokyo displays related classes by showing the relationships between them. This provides a panoramic overview and lets the user choose materials related to their specific area of interest. In addition, users of the University of Tokyo's OCW can search for lecture materials worldwide related to their area of inquiry. This will permit UTOCW to function as a global database for class materials as well.

At the University of Tokyo, our goal is give back to society the fruits of our educational activities. We would also like to assist those who are eager to learn by themselves, and those who would like to take part in a dynamic creative activity. We believe that the university's commitment to society is to be the foundation of wisdom, and to make that wisdom readily available, thereby creating a community of the wise to deal with the problems that exist worldwide.
