私たちの身体を初めとして地球上にあるほぼ全ての物質は81種類の安定な元素からできている。放射性元素を含めても、我々が目にする物質を作る元素は約100種類にしか過ぎない。これらの元素の起源は宇宙にある。137億年前のビッグバン直後と、その後、星の内部や超新星爆発で作られた元素が集積して46億年前に地球が誕生した。 元素は地球上で単体の原子として存在するだけでなく、結びつきあってさまざまな分子を形成し実に多様な物質を生み出した。水と植物に覆われたみどりの地球で生命が生まれ、進化の結果出現した我々人類は、次第に物質の性質を解明し、ついに天然の物質を幾ばくか操って新たな物質を合成する能力まで持つに至った。 本講義では、物質の起源、性質、合成、および利用について、物理、化学、材料工学の第一人者が平易にその全体像を俯瞰する。最終回は地球環境の持続性と限りある地球という観点からの物質の利用を考える。光触媒を例に研究の面白さを感じてもらえる特別講義を用意した。理系の学生はもとより、文系の学生も多数聴講することを期待している。 Almost all of the matter on the Earth, including our bodies, consists of 81 different stable elements. There are no more than 100 elements constituting the matter that we can see, including radioactive elements. The origin of these elements is outer space. These elements were made just after the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago and by the explosions of stars and supernova. They were packed together, and 4.6 billion years ago our Earth was born. The elements do not exist only as simple atoms; they join together and form a variety of molecules, creating a very great range of matter. Life was created on our green Earth, which was covered with water and vegetation, and we humans, who appeared as the result of evolution, gradually understood the properties of matter, finally developing the capacity to form new matter by manipulating various other natural matter. In these lectures, leading authorities on physics, chemistry, and materials science will provide an easy-to-understand overview of the origin, properties, composition, and utilization of matter. In the final lectures, we will consider how matter is to be used from the perspective of the sustainability of the Earth’s environment and the limitations of its resources. We have also prepared a special lecture that will show you the fascinating nature of research, using the study of photo catalysis as an example. We hope that not only science students of course but many students studying the arts and humanities will also attend this lecture series.
